People do what people do
Cut down trees because there’s too much debris
Hang plants in plastic pots on black metal hooks
Get dressed for work, or school, or bed
Walk their dogs around the block or leash their cat
People also
Grow gardens, eat food, bathe
Hoard toilet paper, goods, and boxes
Go to church, synagogue, a mosque, or the woods
Drive cars that get them to places—or ride bikes
And they
Share stories of their grandmother’s recipes
Blow out birthday candles
Smile when their child is polite
Talk about politics, help their neighbors
Plus they
Write scary stories
Create romantic comedies and action movies
Sing in beautiful harmony
Dance, cook, and play games
Oh, and they
Love their family, friends, and others
Celebrate holidays, go on vacations
Collaborate to build homes and businesses
Inspire others to help the poor and needy
I do what I do
I realize I’m a human amongst billions on this planet
Sometimes people’s beliefs clash with my values
I care for Mother Earth
I opt out from plastic containers when possible
I enjoy expressing myself through words
I am loving, kind, and peaceful
I love trees and the sky—flowers too
I don't enjoy cooking, but I cook
I am the only 'me' I know
Mary Campagna
Campagna is my married name
People do what people do
We all make choices
We all decide
That's what we do
About: In a world where I sometimes get angry, frustrated, and sad with people’s negligence and ignorance in the ways they do not care about the earth and/or hurt others—this piece is about accepting that I can only control what I do. I am responsible for my own actions and I do my best to make the world an even better experience for myself and others.
